The seven hills of Rome

Inside the ancient city or on its immediate borders were the seven hills:

Palatine

 (Central)

Capitoline

 (West)

Quirinal

 (North)

Viminal

 (Northeast)

Esquiline

 (East-Northeast)

Caelian

 (Southeast)

Aventine

 (Southwest)

Outside the city were two further hills - the Janiculan (West) and Pincian (North).  Evidence suggests that these were seen as less desirable places to live - the Latin equivalent of getting an 0181 phone number instead of 0171.   ***

***  For non UK residents and the young - when BT split London from one single phone prefix (01) into two, they did so by making inner London 0171 and outer London 0181.  A series of comedy TV adverts (based around Beattie - a Jewish Mother played by Maureen Lipman) portrayed a bit of social one-upmanship between Beattie and her friends based upon who was classed as Inner London and who was Outer.
